Islam is a religion of peace and security that does not allow violence, nor does it permit it except by specific authorization and license under strict conditions. In its essence, violence is not considered a means to achieve any noble goal.

When fighting was legislated, it was ordained as a response to aggression; otherwise, it is fundamentally prohibited. Therefore, Allah Almighty says:

“Permission to fight is given to those against whom war is made, because they have been wronged.” (Al-Hajj: 40)

Authorization is only granted for something that is initially prohibited! Thus, fighting without obtaining this permission is an act of disobedience. This permission was only granted because others had initiated the fighting against you.

When verses appear such as:

“And kill them wherever you meet them.” (Al-Baqarah: 192)

“Fight those from among the people of the Book who believe not in Allah, nor in the Last Day.” (Al-Tawbah: 29)

“Fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you.” (Al-Tawbah: 123)

Some people—ignoring this background, whether intentionally or out of ignorance—rush to claim that Islam commands the killing of dissenters and disbelievers!

Even worse, some Muslims with deviant ideologies and mindsets adopt this view, claiming that Islam commands fighting to spread the religion or to seize power to rule by Sharia!

The Issue of Domestic Discipline

Similarly, regarding the words of Allah Almighty:

“…and strike them.” (An-Nisa: 35)

Some ignore the context of the command and raise their voices claiming that Islam commands the beating of wives!

In reality, Allah Almighty gave permission and authorized “striking” only in the event that a woman is “rebellious” (Nashiz), persisting in her defiance and verbal abuse to the point where she intends to strike him! Had the Holy Quran not permitted that, a believing man would not be able to defend himself or put a limit to her transgression; he would have remained a recipient of slaps and punches without taking action! This is because he would not find in the Quran or its comprehensive, perfect, and pure teaching anything that enables him to do so.

Notably, the phrasing and context of the verse—and what follows it—prohibit transgression and abuse if the woman relents. It commands the man to be magnanimous and noble in his conduct, just as Allah is High and Great:

“Then, if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Surely, Allah is High, Great.” (An-Nisa: 35)

Conclusion

If some Muslims exploit the permission to fight by committing aggression against others unjustly, or if a man strikes his wife oppressively and abusively without her being rebellious or attempting to strike him, this has nothing to do with the original Islamic teaching. Islam and its wise teachings cannot be blamed for such actions.

Therefore, the failure to realize the comprehensiveness of Islamic teaching—and the fact that a believer cannot act except within the limits of what Allah has permitted—is the source of misunderstanding, which may be unintentional for some. As for intentional distortion, it automatically falls away once this truth is realized.

The fundamental principle in relating to others is peace and good relations.
